Hey Everyone -
So I arrived in Mexico last Tuesday! Yay! It was really late when we arrived at the airport. It was FULL immersion for me. No English speakers anywhere. We met the Mission President and we got in his car and he gave us some Carl's Jr burgers which was SO good because it was American food! We drove to where we were going to stay that night and it was fun because he was playing Michael Jackson in his car which was awesome! It was crazy---I have never seen so many people ride motorcycles or police officers holding huge guns in these big trucks! I have never seen so many people stacked on ONE motorcycle either. We saw a family of like 5 or 6 all hanging off one motorcycle. It was crazy!
We got there and had a good sleep. The next day we went to the office and met the assistants and a bunch of other missionaries. We each had an interview with the Mission President and received our assignments and I was assigned to San Miguel but this past week I have been in Celaya since there isn't a house for me and my companion in San Miguel yet. I am staying with 3 other missionaries and they all have phones except for me so that is sort of hard but it's nice because it actually has given me a lot of time to study. We went to San Miguel on Sunday and it is SUCH a beautiful city! I'm serious--like every single street could be such a cool photo. We went there for a baptism and we met the bishop there. When we got there the missionaries told me I could baptize the woman and I was a little scared/excited. But then she said she wanted Elder Gutierrez to baptize her. Her name was Sonja. It would have been cool to baptize someone my first week ha ha! Anyway, it was a gorgeous city and great to get out. We drove back to Celaya and Monday was P-Day and I got to talk to my family which was GREAT! Basically we just hang out in our apartment and I study all day.
One thing---the SMELLS here are out of this world . . . the first day when we got here I felt like it smelled like the hamster section at Petsmart ha ha! But when you drive down the street I smell like 50 different smells and within a few seconds it all changes. It's so freakin' wierd. Oh, there are SOOOOO many dogs everywhere and tons of chicken bones laying around. When people are done eating their chicken they throw their bones in the street for the dogs. The weather here is really nice and the people are SUPER nice. We have only talked to like 2 members but they are the nicest people. They understand that I am learning Spanish so that's good.
This first week kinda stunk because I really, really miss my family. Sunday was also really hard but that whole day I was a little sick. I had a stomach ache and a headache. I think it was partly because I was missing my family but also because I ate 6 empanadas and a huge pambazo (a sandwich with potatoes and chorizo sausage) the night before. They were so good and I was so hungry. I don't think my comps understand how hungry I always am. I miss my friends and family so much and oh, I'm sorry I couldn't write back because I don't have my own phone or a computer in our apartment.
Yesterday on our P-day we played soccer with our WHOLE Zone and it was so much fun because I was able to meet a lot of other Americans and we were just messing around. It was a ton of fun! I'm going to love P-days. To wash my clothes I have to "plunge and scrub" on a wash board then hang them to dry. But I'm doing great. Oh yeah, the street tacos here are absolutely amazing and my companion is teaching me to solve a rubix cube en espangol! It's hard but fun!
Thank you all for your support. I'm just trusting in the Lord and I'm studying SO much and praying a lot every day. I love you all SO much!
Elder Chamberlain
