New Comp and Good Times in San Miguel
Hey Everyone- (S1 E13)
How's it going? I know it's been forever since I've written. So this might be a catch up email. A lot has happened in the last two weeks. I had my last week with Elder Sierra. We actually worked a little more in his last week which is what I have been wanting to do for the past two months. He apologized about not being a good trainer to me and we had a good talk about it so it's all good.
We continue to teach through calling people who find us through social media. Most are just curious from videos the church puts out but there are some who let us teach them. It's over the phone though which is still hard. We also got to do a service project last week which was really fun but super hard! Hermano Gonzales needed us to help put up cement posts for a fence they were building and each post was around 500 pounds! We had to place the posts in this swampy area and it was really, really hard. We placed around 15 or 16 of them. Each about 2 meters apart. But it felt so good to be out of our house and working. We worked from 7:30 am to 3 p.m.
Monday was P-Day and it was transfer day. I have a new comp and his name is Elder Gonzales and he is AWESOME! I love this guy already. We went to the city centro of San Miguel the first day and we met an hermana from the ward who was selling necklaces in this square next to the cathedral. It was all lit up with decorations everywhere and so beautiful! My comp had never been there before and he kept saying, "It's so beautiful here! I can't believe I'm here! I feel like I'm in a movie!" There was a lot of action going on and we asked her and she told us they were actually getting ready to film a scene for a movie ha ha! So we got some ice cream and watched this actor come out on TOP of the cathedral where the bells are! His tech crew put a safety harness on him and there were drones flying everywhere. Then we heard the director yell, "Tres, Dos, Uno, Acion!" Then the dude totally fell off the roof of the cathedral! It was really cool to see!
I really love my new comp. We work A LOT. Bishop said we weren't allowed to eat at member's homes anymore because of Covid so the members are giving us money to eat. I feel a little bad about it because I liked getting to know the members more than eating their food. Plus I know they don't have a lot of money but they give us what they can and they are so generous. But we figured out a way to get around it at the Gonzales home (same name as my comp haha!) Hermana Gonzales made a picnic lunch for us on their ROOF! It was amazing! The view of the city was so beautiful and her cooking is so delicious. Honestly, I LOVE the Gonzales family. They feed us EVERY Sunday---but we might need to eat on their roof every time now?? I am so grateful for them.
Today I shared a cool lesson today on prayer. It went really well and my Spanish was pretty good. I felt like I plateaued a little on my Spanish but now it's ramping up a little more. I met this girl from Australia on Sunday---her dad is working here for the summer and it was fun to speak some English with someone. Oh, and I got a haircut the other day. I now look like I'm in the Army!! One of the missionaries who gives haircuts for free told me to close my eyes and halfway through the haircut I peeked and I was like "BRO! What did you do to my hair?" It was kinda funny! He said he was giving me the "pelon" cut which means bald. It wasn't actually bald but we all laughed and I guess there's no better time to do it than when I'm out in Mexico where I don't know anyone ha ha!
I want to leave you with an awesome scripture in 1 Corinthians 15:58 which says, "Therefore my beloved brethren be ye steadfast and immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord; forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain." That scripture has helped me a lot to know that what I'm doing here is not in vain. Sometimes I wonder "why am I here?" But any time you are doing work for God, He knows and it's not in vain. I love you all SO much. Please email me and let me know how you are doing.
Muchas Gracias y Te Amo,
Elder Spencer Chamberlain
